What is the meaning of baptism? The moment we trust Christ as our Savior, we are identified with Him in His death, burial and resurrection. When a person is immersed in the water, it is symbolic of the death of what Scripture calls the “old nature.” It is a portrayal of leaving behind ungodly habits and practices. When a person is raised up from the water, it is symbolic of the new life that is found in Christ. The old has been washed away and the new has begun. This "new life" is characterized by freedom from sin through the power of the Holy Spirit. Baptism is an act of obedience to God and a public, outward proclamation of one's salvation.
